About Rahat’s talk

Tell us about the talk that you are planning to give at DevRelCon London 2023

My talk at DevRelCon London 2023 is all about onboarding yourself before onboarding your communities. Many Developer Relations jobs require you to be very technical, so you have to be able to speak in front of an audience about technical concepts, be able to help developers, etc.

I come from the Web3 space, where the technology is constantly changing. Every single day there are always new innovations going on. It can be pretty hard to figure out how to keep up with the fast-paced nature of Web3 in general. I’m going to be sharing my experiences of how I learned brand new concepts almost on the go in my last two positions, both of them doing DevRel in the Web3 space. We’ll be focusing on some of the strategies around how to make sure that you’re able to convey different technical topics in very fast paced industries such as this.

Why should people attend your talk? What should they expect to take away from it?

I think this topic leads into some of the core, fundamental responsibilities in the DevRel space. When you’re working in Developer Relations, you’re working directly with developers, and in this industry you’re working directly with cutting edge technology. This technology  doesn’t always have the best documentation, nor are there many people with clear cut examples of how to do things. It’s sort of up to you to figure out a lot of it on the job.

So, this talk is going to be important, especially for those in the Web3 space who perhaps are coming from a place where there are always lots of resources available online. So they don’t have to always be the one to create that ground level education stuff for developers in the field. My talk is geared towards how to shift your mindset from expecting an abundance of content that you can take, learn and reuse for your communities, to building some of this content from the ground up.

What are you most looking forward to at this year’s DevRelCon London event?

Personally, I’m really looking forward to learning from other DevRel folks in this space, not only in Web3 but outside of it too. I feel like I’m very confined and only learning from other folks in the Web3 space. So I’m very excited just to be going to a conference that’s really dedicated to DevRel in general. I really appreciate that it has an awesome Web3 track there, but I really want to learn from other folks, get other people’s perspectives.

I think it’s important in any profession just to learn from the experiences that other people have. Our specific part of the tech industry is very, very new, so we don’t have a lot of OGs or senior DevRel folks in this space. We are kind of just learning from each other, and figuring things out on the go, so it will be awesome to learn from other people and their experiences.
